August on Lake Bomoseen runs on two shorelines. The west side, along Route 30 North, is where the kitchens and the lodging sit, close enough to each other that you can walk between them if the mosquitoes cooperate. The east side, inside Bomoseen State Park, is quieter, threaded with the Glen Lake Trail that runs from the park to Half Moon Pond. Castleton village stitches the two together, mostly on Thursdays.
If you have owned a camp here for a decade, none of that is news. What is worth paying attention to this month is how the pieces have shifted since last summer, which weekends are going to pull traffic in opposite directions, and which stewardship fights are quietly setting the terms for every swim, paddle, and dock repair from here through Labor Day.
The Route 30 North strip has both kitchens open
For the first time in a while, both lakeside restaurants are running full schedules in the same season. The Lake House Pub & Grille at 3569 Route 30 N came back for the season, having closed out 2025 with a note that they would reopen in May 2026. It is worth remembering how narrow that window is. A local restaurant guide out of Wander lists the summer hours as 4 PM to 9 PM Monday through Thursday and 11:30 AM to 9 PM Friday through Sunday, which means if you are hosting weekday guests before six, you are cooking. The kitchen's summer identity leans hard on the deck: crab cakes with poblano corn salsa, beer-battered fish and chips, lobster mac and cheese, and live music on the deck daily from 6 to 9 pm.
Two miles south, the Lake Bomoseen Lodge & Taproom sits on the shore with a fireplace-and-lake-view dining room, a menu of pub fare including burgers, fries, and wings, and an extensive craft beer list weighted toward local Vermont brews. The material detail that matters this summer is the architecture of the room itself. A design feature of garage-style doors takes full advantage of the lakeside setting for indoor and outdoor seating, which is why the Lodge is the default answer when the wind kicks up and the Pub & Grille's deck is a bad bet. It runs on a shorter week than the Pub. Wednesday through Friday 4 PM to 9 PM, Saturday and Sunday noon to 9 PM, closed Monday and Tuesday. Neither of these is a food-scene revelation. What they are, together, is a working Route 30 corridor that has not always been intact in recent Augusts.
Thursday is the connector day
The village anchor is the Castleton Village Farmers' Market, which runs Thursdays 3:30 to 6:00, June 5 to October 9, on Main Street next to Citizens Bank. It is small on purpose, and the vendor mix is the point rather than the volume. If you want scale, the Vermont Farmers Market at Depot Park in Rutland runs Saturday 9 AM to 2 PM, May 9 through October 31. Bomoseen households tend to work both.
The other Thursday-and-weekend option, once tomato season lands, is the farmstand loop. A short list worth knowing by name:
- Brown's Orchard & Farmstand, 1083 Route 30 S in Castleton, run by Charlie Brown, carries fresh local produce, artisan spreads, and homemade baked goods including pies, cider donuts, honey, maple syrup, jams, and cider.
- Old Gates Farm in Castleton, at 2194 South Street, open Monday through Saturday 10 AM to 6 PM from June 15 through October 31, on the state's Farm to Family coupon list.
- Brandon House of Pizza as the reliable rainy-Thursday backup, described in one visitor guide as a family spot with signature pizzas, calzones, hot and cold subs, and arcade games, dine-in or takeout.
None of that is news to a year-round resident. What is useful is holding the three schedules side by side. The Pub & Grille is closed at market time. The Lodge & Taproom is closed Thursdays entirely. The market runs 3:30 to 6. If you have out-of-town guests staying with you and you want to feed them without cooking, Thursday is the day that requires the most planning, and the answer is usually to graze the market, grab something from Brown's, and drive to Rutland or wait for the Lodge to open Wednesday or Friday.
The east side is a walking side
The Glen Lake Trail at Bomoseen State Park is an all-day, there-and-back hike from the park to Half Moon Pond State Park, and the seasonal cadence of park programming is worth checking against the state Forests, Parks and Recreation calendar because the schedule shifts year to year. What has held steady is the character of the walking. It is a slate-country trail. A short, roughly one-mile loop near the park winds through quarries, rubble piles, and building ruins of the West Castleton Railroad and Slate Company, which is the version to bring visitors on when you want the story of the lake's industrial past in under an hour.
If you have kids in the house in August, the park's naturalist programming has historically leaned into the same set of themes each summer: slate-focused art projects meeting at the park office, a 1.6-mile Bomoseen loop trail walk keyed to nighttime wildlife, birdfeeder-making sessions from pinecones, and raptor-focused programs on the birds of prey that inhabit the park. Check the current week's board at the park office rather than assuming last August's schedule carries over.
Two weekends will pull the lake in opposite directions
Two dates on the August calendar are worth planning around because they move very different traffic through very different parts of the region.

Neither is a Bomoseen event in a strict sense. Both reshape a Bomoseen weekend. The KOA's off-season Halloween weekend is one of the reasons the campground has become a year-in-year-out community fixture rather than a passthrough; the campground marked 40 years at Lake Bomoseen with a July celebration this season. The State Fair is a Rutland institution, and if you have not built the drive into your Sunday plans, the return traffic on Route 4 will find you anyway.
There is also the LBA rhythm underneath both. The Lake Bomoseen Association co-sponsors the July 4 fireworks, hosts the annual picnic and monthly socials, and its board is elected each July by a vote of the general membership. If you own here and have never gone to the annual meeting, August is when the results of that July vote start showing up in what is happening on the water.
The through-line that is not on any calendar
The one thing that shapes August on this lake more than any restaurant reopening or event weekend is the milfoil fight, and it has quietly become the defining local story of the past few years.
In February 2022, the Lake Bomoseen Association, later joined by the Lake Bomoseen Preservation Trust, filed an Aquatic Nuisance Control Permit Application with the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation, calling for use of ProcellaCOR EC to treat Eurasian watermilfoil starting in July 2022 on 223 acres in the north end. The VT DEC issued a draft denial in June 2023 and finalized the denial on April 2, 2024. The mechanical alternative is not without its critics either. Mechanical harvester cuttings can reseed surrounding areas, plant fragments float to clean areas and cause new infestations, and regrowth in cut areas is aggressive up to more than 20 feet of depth.
That is not editorial. That is what determines where a paddleboard goes cleanly through the water in August and where it does not, and it is why the Lake Bomoseen Environmental Alliance runs its lake-monitoring, scientific research, advocacy, and education work as a separate organization from the LBA. Water quality itself is the good news in the story. Lake Bomoseen currently has good water quality, especially compared to many other lakes in Vermont, with an average chlorophyll-a value of 2.0 ug/L corresponding to the oligotrophic state, indicating that Lake Bomoseen does not have high levels of planktonic algae including cyanobacteria, and all recorded values falling into the mesotrophic or oligotrophic states, suggesting that Bomoseen is not eutrophic and not trending overall toward being eutrophic.
For a homeowner, that is the number that matters more than any restaurant hours. The clarity of the water your dock sits over is the outcome of a decade of small, contested decisions by neighbors sitting in a room together in July.
Where this leaves your August
